Anyway, here’s what you can expect in Today’s issue:

Did you know that Cary has its own film festival? Its official name “BEYOND: The Cary Film Festival” runs September 10th to 13th at the historic Cary Theater, now in its ninth year. It's built around shorter pieces, so nothing runs longer than 40 minutes and every screening is a block of four to six films followed by a 20-minute Q&A with the filmmakers.

Opening night is Thursday the 10th at 7PM with “Free Joan Little”, a 36-minute documentary about the 1975 NC case that became a rallying point for civil rights. The ticket includes the opening party at BREW after as well.

Friday and Saturday are mostly shorts blocks, free-to-attend industry talks, and workshops at the Gathering House in Downtown Cary Park. Sunday closes with a live reading of the winning screenplay at 1PM and a "Best of Beyond" screening of the award winners at 3PM.

Tickets are on sale now. I’ll be around for part of the weekend as well if you want to come say hello. Excited to make it out to support some great filmmakers.

Over on Harrison Ave sits Bosphorus, a reader recommended spot! It was the area's first Turkish restaurant and opened back in 2006. Lunch and dinner are both up for grabs if you’ve never been here.

Lunch (11AM to 3PM most days) tends to be quicker items such as gyros, wraps, and Turkish pizzas. These are generally a thin-crusted pizza topped with spiced meats, veggies, and fresh cheese. Be sure to stop by on your next break if you’re nearby.

Dinner (3PM to 9PM most days) is where you can find the larger entrees. Plates with charbroiled lamb and beef kebabs, kofta (ground meat), and plates that arrive with bulgur pilaf, salad, and specialty made pide bread. Staying in tonight? They also let you order online.

Two new rezoning cases get their first public airing Wednesday night at 6:30PM, over Zoom. These are early neighborhood meetings, not the council hearing (step 2 of 5 roughly).

The larger one is on East Chatham close to the main downtown strip. Chatham Street Investors wants to rezone 304, 306, and 310 E. Chatham Street for up to 50 apartments and 8,000 square feet of shops in a building up to five stories tall.

The second is out in Chatham County: Four Star Holdings wants to annex about 21 acres at 955 Earnest Jones Road into Cary for up to 27 single-family homes.

Anyone can register and listen in. Neighbors within 800 feet get a mailed notice.

A few things to get you through until the long Labor Day weekend. Expect some more great stuff to do when we talk on Friday (but many people tend to vacation out of town).

All Week, August 31st - September 6th: Veolia Pickleball National Championships - Times Vary · Cary Tennis Park hosts the first-ever national championships. Around 2,000 players and the top-ranked pros in the sport, with a $1.6 million prize pool.

Wednesday, September 2nd: Sunset Music Series: Police & Thieves - 5:30PM to 8:30PM · Waverly Place Park kicks off its September concert series with a Raleigh band covering The Police, The Clash, Talking Heads, and other late-70s and early-80s staples. Free and family friendly.

Wednesday, September 2nd: Salsa Night: Lessons + Social - 7:15PM to 11:30PM · KōMANA Brewing Company on Ryan Road hosts its weekly Latin dance night. The beginner-friendly lesson runs 7:30 to 8:30 (no partner needed), then it's open dancing.

Thursday, September 3rd: Live at Lunch: Joey Calderaio - 11:30AM to 1:30PM · Downtown Cary Park Plaza hosts a free lunchtime set from this American reggae-rock singer-songwriter. Grab lunch downtown or bring your own, outside food is welcome!

Thursday, September 3rd: The Session Jazz & Open Jam - 8PM to 11PM · Bond Brothers Eastside hosts another weekly jazz night. The house band plays the first hour, then the jam opens up to anyone with an instrument. Great spot to meet other musicians.
